The Atlantic Ocean is one of the world's great cruise routes. To early pioneers, the crossing brought them to their new life in the new world. In the 1950s, transatlantic cruises symbolised the glamorous lifestyle of many celebrity guests. And now, transatlantic cruises offer an alternative way of travelling for those wishing to unwind and take a little extra time getting between the two continents.
Today, only one ship regularly crosses the Atlantic: Cunard Cruises' very grand Queen Mary 2. She replaced the QE2 early in 2004 and currently offers both east and west bound sailings between Southampton and New York from April through to November. The Queen Mary 2 offers passengers a wide range of accommodation, onboard facilities & activities to choose from. And with no port of call, many will agree the best thing about transatlantic cruises is the voyage itself - an ideal escape from busy lives at home! After you have settled in explore the Queen Mary 2 at leisure. Discover her many public rooms, restaurants, the biggest dance floor at sea, planetarium, theatre, spa, piano bars, lounges, gym, swimming pools and plenty deck space to enjoy.
The QM2 carries relative few passengers for her size. This 150,000 tonnes vessel is host to just over 2,000 guests. Her specific design separates her from any other cruise ship in the world ready to take on the waves of the Atlantic Ocean without disturbing her passengers.
Cunard Cruises operates westbound sailings from Southampton, while eastbound cruises depart from New York. Other lines sail from Boston, Miami & Fort Lauderdale to Barcelona, Palma and Venice. These sailings operate mainly during April and October at the beginning and end of the seasons as cruise companies to re-position their ships. During this time many ships will also depart for Europe from Caribbean ports and often include stops at the Canaries or the Azores depending on the time of year.
Transatlantic cruises with Cunard Cruises will normally take 6 or 7 days, however other companies are dependent on the route they take and sailings can take up to 2 weeks. Offering a superb selection of cuisine, leisure activities, evening entertainments and kids clubs, ensuring the entire family has a memorable experience.
Once you have arrived at your destination your options are many. International Cruise Centre can arrange for you to stay for a few days and then fly or sail back. Visit friends or relatives, hire a car or fly to San Francisco or Las Vegas. Some guests choose to fly to the USA first and then board the Queen Mary 2 for a very relaxing homeward journey. They arrive refreshed, without jet-lag and with the memories of a very unique travel experience.
